Learn how to make a simple homemade hot chocolate using basic kitchen ingredients. This guide explains ingredients, equipment, and steps for one serving.
The Process
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small saucepan, add cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mix them together evenly so the cocoa powder blends well and will not form lumps during cooking.
Add a Little Milk: Pour 2 tablespoons of milk into the saucepan. Whisk slowly until the mixture forms a smooth chocolate paste. This small step helps the cocoa powder dissolve smoothly in the liquid.
Add Remaining Milk: Gradually pour the rest of the milk (about 1 cup total) into the saucepan while whisking. Continue mixing so the liquid becomes evenly blended and smooth.
Heat the Mixture: Place the saucepan on medium-low heat and stir continuously for 3–4 minutes. The mixture should become hot and smooth as the cocoa powder and sugar dissolve completely. Do not allow the drink to boil.
Add Chocolate and Flavor: Add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Stir slowly until the chocolate melts and the drink becomes richer and smoother.
Serve: Pour the finished hot chocolate into a mug. Add toppings like whipped cream or marshmallows if desired, and serve while hot.
