Learn how to make one perfect cup of oolong hot tea at home using simple tools, correct temperature, and easy step-by-step instructions.
The Process
Heat the Water: Heat fresh filtered water until it reaches 85–95°C (185–205°F). Do NOT use boiling water (100°C / 212°F), as it can make the tea bitter. If you do not have a thermometer, let boiling water sit for 1–2 minutes before pouring.
Warm the Cup (Optional but Recommended): Pour a small amount of hot water into your cup, swirl it around gently, and discard it. This helps maintain the final tea temperature.
Add the Tea: Place 1 teaspoon loose leaf oolong into your infuser OR place 1 tea bag directly into your cup.
Pour Water Over Tea: Pour 1 cup of hot water slowly over the leaves to allow even extraction.
Steep Properly: Let the tea steep for 3 minutes if using light oolong. Steep for 4–5 minutes if using darker or roasted oolong. Avoid steeping too long to prevent bitterness.
Remove Leaves: Remove the tea bag or strain out the loose leaves carefully.
Customize (Optional): Add honey, lemon, or milk if desired. Stir gently and enjoy immediately.
