Learn how to make a rich ristretto at home using simple tools, exact timing, and easy steps for a smooth and balanced single coffee serving.
The Process
Grind Coffee: Measure 18–20 g coffee beans. Grind beans fresh. Use a grind slightly finer than espresso grind.
Distribute Grounds: Place ground coffee into portafilter. Distribute evenly across the basket. Tap gently or use a distribution tool to level the surface.
Tamp: Hold tamper level. Press firmly using about 15–20 kg pressure. Ensure the coffee surface is flat and smooth. Avoid excessive twisting.
Lock Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the espresso machine. Lock it securely. Start brewing immediately after locking.
Pull the Ristretto Shot: Start the timer when extraction begins. Target extraction time: 15–20 seconds. Aim for 14–20 g liquid output. Maintain a 1:1 brew ratio. Stop extraction before the stream turns pale or watery.
