Making steamed milk at home is simple using basic kitchen tools. This guide explains ingredients, equipment, and steps to create smooth, creamy milk foam.

The Process

01.

Heat the Milk: Pour 1 cup milk into a small saucepan and place it on the stove over medium-low heat. Stir gently while heating to prevent the milk from burning or forming a skin on the surface. ⏱ Time: 2–3 minutes

02.

Watch the Temperature: The ideal temperature is 60–65°C (140–150°F). The milk should be hot but not boiling. Light steam should appear, and small bubbles may form around the edge of the pan. ⚠ Do not boil the milk because boiling can ruin the foam texture. ⏱ Time: 1–2 minutes

03.

Froth the Milk: Remove the saucepan from heat and whisk the milk quickly to add air. Frothing options: Whisk method: whisk rapidly for 20–30 seconds Jar method: shake hot milk in a jar 20 seconds French press: pump the plunger 10–15 times This step creates microfoam with small smooth bubbles. ⏱ Time: 30 seconds

04.

Settle the Foam: Tap the container gently on the counter and swirl the milk slowly. This helps remove large bubbles and creates a smooth and creamy texture. ⏱ Time: 10 seconds

05.

Serve: Pour the steamed milk into a mug or into coffee drinks like Latte or Cappuccino. The milk should appear glossy and smooth. Total time: 4–6 minutes
